What is an Apprenticeship & Traineeship?
Apprenticeships and traineeships are jobs that combine work and structured training.
Although they vary from one industry to another, apprenticeships and traineeships include:
Paid employment under an appropriate industrial arrangement (for example, an award or enterprise agreement).
A Training Contract that is signed by both the employer and apprentice or trainee and registered with the NSW, Victoria, NT and QLD, Department of Education and Training (DET). The only exception to this rules are trainee apprentices.
A qualification, delivered by a Registered Training Organisation that meets the requirements of a declared apprenticeship or traineeship in NSW and leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
How have apprenticeships and traineeships changed?
During the past few years, a number of significant improvements have been made to the apprenticeship and traineeship system in each state to make training more flexible.
For example, some traineeship in NSW can now be:
- delivered completely in the workplace
- customised to meet the needs of employers
- delivered part-time
- offered to existing workers (workers currently in the workforce)
- offered to school students
- established in new industries and at higher qualification levels
- Easily linked to further vocational education and training and university studies.
School Based Part-time Traineeships and Apprenticeships
Q) What are the arrangements for school-based part-time apprenticeships and traineeships?
A) Part-time traineeships and apprenticeships in schools provide senior secondary students with three qualifications:
- a nationally recognised VET qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
- a Certificate of Proficiency on satisfactory completion of the traineeship or apprenticeship
- credit toward the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

Obligations
The Traineeship Training Contract is a formal agreement between the employer and the Trainee. It’s a legally binding document that outlines the obligations an employer has to a Trainee
The essence of a Trainee is on-the-job training and the work experience that the Trainee will gain. The employer is responsible for ensuring that the Australian Trainee has access to the full range of work required to develop the skills and industry knowledge they need on the job.
A Registered Training Organisation
Registered Training organisations (RTO’s)
- help you choose the right training
- customise training to suit your needs
- conduct a skills assessment of each Australian Trainee
- provide workplace support to the employer and Australian Trainee
Under the policy of User Choice, we decide how the training takes place, for example, during or after work hours, on the internet or in a group training session.

- Certificate III in Sport & Recreation
- Certificate IV n Sport & Recreation
- Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation
- Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation
- Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation
